SUNY Niagara falls to SUNY Brockport in first action after national duals

After a runners-up finish at the NJCAA Division III National Duals one week ago, SUNY Niagara returned to action and lost to NCAA Division III SUNY Brockport, 53-0, Saturday in Brockport.

SUNY Niagara is 7-4 in duals this season. This came after a 3-2 finish at the national duals. SUNY Niagara recorded wins against Union County College (NJ) and Northland Community & Technical College (MN) in Pool B action and Rochester Community & Technical College (MN) in the cross-over round, but lost to Harper College (IL) in the championship match.

Brockport won all 10 matches, including three pins, three by forfeit and two technical falls. Max Morrison began the event with a 19-3 technical fall over SUNY Niagara’s Amari Libertone-Robinson in the 165-pound weight class.

Following Brockport’s forfeit win at 174, SUNY Niagara’s Bobby Ranger was pinned by Avery Bustamante at 184 for the Thunderwolves’ 17-0 deficit. After a 1-2 performance at duals, Chris Howatt lost to Simon Lingle in a 12-1 major decision.

After a forfeit win at 285, SUNY Brockport’s Trevor Middendorf defeated SUNY Niagara’s J.J. Lucinski behind a 20-4 technical fall at 125, which gave the host Golden Eagles a 32-0 lead. SUNY Niagara’s Ethan Fletcher then lost to SUNY Brockport’s Kolton Kelley in a 7-3 decision at 133.

The Golden Eagles then picked up a forfeit win and back-to-back pins at 149 (Mason Mangialino over Cam Ingram) and 157 (Tyler Rossini over Nicholas Pawlak) in the final three matches.

NOTES:

SUNY Niagara is now 0-4 all-time against SUNY Brockport since a 46-6 loss on Feb. 11, 2023. This was also the Thunderwolves’ first shutout loss since a 58-0 defeat against Olivet College during the Stenburg Duals at Muskegon CC on Nov. 3, 2023.

SUNY Niagara is 7-4 in duals this season. The Thunderwolves were 6-4 last season and are four wins away from recording their 500th in program history. Since 1973-74, SUNY Niagara is 496-267-8 all-time in duals and crossed double-digit wins 24 times, 19 of which came in the Eric Knuutila era (1973-74 to 2010-11).

Ranger recorded his 36th career match and is 14-22 overall. The sophomore from Hornell finished 7-14 last season with second-place finishes at 197, including at the NJCAA Region III championships, and 7-8 this season.

After the loss, Howatt is 4-8 on the season. The former Pioneer High School star, who finished runner-up at 215 at states last season, has recorded three pins in his first season with the Thunderwolves.

Previously competing for Wayne Central High School in Ontario, NY, Ethan Fletcher is now 9-15 at 133 in his first year with the Thunderwolves. Two of Fletcher’s nine wins are pins.

SUNY Niagara continues its season at Jamestown CC in the Jayhawk Open at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 24 in Jamestown. Joe Cicco placed sixth at 165 at the event for the Thunderwolves last season.
