CLEVELAND, Ohio - RIT Sophomore Josh Harkless finished second in the 197 lb. open division as the Tigers competed at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open at Case Western University, Sunday.
Harkless won a 3-1 decision over Cleveland State's Joey Lyons in the quarterfinals and an 8-1 decision over Glenville State's Jordan Williams in the semifinals before falling to Division I Indiana's Nicholas Willham, 9-4, in the first-place match.
Sophomores Dara Heydarpour and Nate DeGroff both notched third-place finishes. Heydarpour's came in the underclassmen 165 lb. division, as he won the third-place match by pin at 0:46 against Mercyhurst's Mark McGonigal. Heydarpour went 5-1 in the tournament, losing only in the champion bracket quarterfinals to Tiffin's Jakob Hurley on a 2:23 pin. DeGroff, competing at 285 lbs. in the underclassmen division, also went 5-1, losing to unattached Ohio State wrestler Mike Misita on a 2:01 pin before winning five straight, culminating in 2:14 pin of Tiffin's Clayton Ours.
First-year Gabe Scalise took home fourth in the 133 lbs section of the undergraduate division. After falling to Jack Sparent of Cleveland State in the opening round, Scalise won five straight in the consolation bracket, winning by pin against Tiffin's Chris Oleksiak and Frank Depinet, decisions over Ashland's Jayden Strickland and RIT teammate Lee Rubin, and by pin against Lake Erie College's Brendan Hamilton in the consolation finals. Scalise would lose by no-contest to Sparent in the third-place match to finish his tournament at 5-2.
Graduate student Christopher Horton placed fifth in the 141 lb. open division, going 2-2 and ending his day by defeating unattached wrestler De'Ante Evans in the fifth-place match.
The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Waynesburg Duals.
