RIT takes 1st at Ned McGinley Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, PA. - Senior Kaidon Winters and sophomore Michael Glynn III won their respective weight classes with 5-0 records to lead RIT to a first-place finish at the Ned McGinley Invitational Saturday.

Senior Christopher Horton and junior Colby Giroux finished second in their weight classes with 3-1 records, while junior Ben Dougherty advanced to the consolation finals and finished fourth with a 3-2 record for RIT's best finishes.

Nearly 30 RIT wrestlers helped the Tigers to first place with a combined 70-plus victories for 112 team points, besting runner-up Averett University by seven points. Only three of the competing 15 colleges reached 100 team points. The event featured teams from six states that was hosted by King's College.

Winters picked up where he left off after last competing for RIT and claiming a 2020 NCAA Mideast Regional title at 157 lbs. on Feb. 29, 2020, with a 585 day layoff caused by the health pandemic. The senior grappler had RIT's most impressive finish of the day after disposing of all five of his opponents by fall in a combined 7:51. Winters took the 141 lb. title with a 2:14 pin of Cortland's James Udasco. In the semifinals, Winters pinned Scranton's Daniel Kosinski in 2:06. Prior to that, the senior pinned Kevin Luker (Roger Williams) in 1:15, Maximus Parra (NYU) in 11 seconds and Chandler Marwin (Cortland) in 2:05.

Glynn took the 149 lb. title with a 9-2 decision over NYU's Anthony Chavez after advancing with a semifinal fall over Ben Bariso (Roger Williams) in 1:59. Prior to that, the sophomore took fall victories over Greg Croce (Delaware Valley) in 1:55 and Jack Garcia (NYU) in 39 seconds, before starting with a 2-0 decision over Nicholas Semon (Penn).

Horton's second-place finish at 141 lbs. was highlighted by a 12-2 major decision over Noah Clawson (Kings), a 5-3 decision over Russell Benson (Delaware Valley), and a fall over Max Shaffer (Wilkes) in 4:15. Giroux's 184 lb. runner-up finish featured victories over Decian Skelly (NYU), Kowan Lee (Averett) and Quentin Day (Wilkes).

In Dougherty's consolation runner-up, fourth-place finish at 174 lbs., the junior claimed wins over Pitt-Bradford's Victor Elias (3-2), Scranton's Jeremiah Oakes (5-4), and King's Kade Kravits (6-5).

Other RIT top performers with five wins each were freshman Josh Harkless (197 lbs.), freshman Dara Heydarpour (157 lbs.) and Nathan Parker (184 lbs.). Senior Zach Stedeford (174 lbs.) finished with four wins, while three wins each came from junior Calik Kennedy (285 lbs.), senior Christopher Dean (133 lbs.), senior Jake Warner (174 lbs.), junior James Ost (165 lbs.), junior Josh Post (133 lbs.) and freshman Lee Rubin (125 lbs.).

RIT wrestling next travels to Cleveland for the Ohio Intercollegiate Open on Sunday, Nov. 14.
