Addison has big day in Corning

NEWS

CORNING | This wasn't your ordinary invitational wrestling tournament.

Corning District hosted teams from Addison, Harpursville, Waverly and Chatham, Va., where 1990 Addison graduate Greg Cook is the head coach. But unlike an invitational, each team squared off against each other in a round-robin format.

Brett Hale (125 pounds), Mike Thompson (135), Mark Hovey (140) and Cory Spencer (152) each won all four of their respective matches as Addison won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

"The four that went 4-0 just really did everything well," Addison head coach Frank Bielski said. "They wrestled well on their feet, they wrestled well on the mat, they wrestled all tough kids. The Harpursville kid at 125 was extremely strong and Brett handled him."

Addison defeated Corning 43-27, downed Chatham 62-12, ousted Waverly 39-33 and topped Harpursville 34-31.

Don Crouch (112), Jeff Laursen (189) and Kevin Metarko (215) each went 3-1 on the day for the Knights.

Bielski was also pleased with the wrestling of Mandi Herrington, who went 2-2 with a pair of pins at 103 pounds.

"You go to an all-day tournament and some kids aren't going to wrestle four times and half the kids are up in the stands or out getting something to eat," Bielski said. "This way, the entire team is in it and they're getting support. This really works really nice and this is a really close-knit group of kids."

Despite Corning's 1-3 finish at the tournament, head coach Pat Barnes is looking forward to hosting more round-robin tournaments in the future.

"The coaches were very pleased to get a chance to wrestle an out-of-state school and also get out-of-section opponents," Barnes said. "It helps everybody and you get to wrestle good quality competition, so it worked out real nice."

Chris Stewart was Corning's lone undefeated wrestler on the day, going 4-0 at 145 pounds.

"He's wrestling very tough right now," Barnes said of Stewart.

Brent Jimerson (160), Joe Suman (135) and Kyle Baker (130) each went 3-1 on the day for Corning.

Corning's only team victory came courtesy of a 54-18 win against Chatham. The Hawks dropped a 33-27 decision to Waverly and Harpursville handed Corning a 45-21 setback.

Harpursville went 3-1, Waverly was 2-2 and Chatham finished the day at 0-4.
