ROANOKE, March 3 - Daniel McGillivray knew only bits and pieces about Manassas Park's rich wrestling history before transferring to the school from New York in December. Last night at Salem Civic Center, he took his first steps toward becoming an integral part of it.
The 152-pound sophomore capped off an overwhelming two-day performance at the Virginia Class A wrestling tournament with a 5-0 win over Madison County's Aaron Darnell in the final. McGillivray was hardly tested through four matches, pinning his first two opponents and scoring a technical fall in the semifinals.
McGillivray and 125-pounder Steven Hall each won titles for the Cougars, who finished second behind Glenvar and saw their string of three straight team championships snapped. Still, Manassas Park put five of its eight wrestlers into the finals, the same amount as last season when it secured the title before the finals even started.
"We knew Glenvar had it locked up before the finals and it didn't really affect us. It really didn't change anything," said Hall, a runner-up last season. "We had five guys in the finals. We did the same thing we do every year, we just had less wrestlers in the tournament."
Meanwhile, Christiansburg won the AA tournament for the sixth straight year and James Wood's S.R. Shiley was the Washington area's lone champion, defeating Northside's Cameron Hurd, 9-5, in the final.
Considered a heavy favorite to defend his 112-pound title at the start of the season, Shiley was upset by Millbrook's Wes Heavener in the Region II final last week. The loss left Shiley with a considerably tougher draw this weekend, setting up a de facto finals matchup in the quarterfinals with Christiansburg's Andrew Robertson, whom he beat, 4-3.
"I was looking at the brackets before I came here and I realized I got the tougher side of the bracket," Shiley said. "So going into it I knew I'd just have to earn it more than I did last year and I think I did that."
Virginia AA/A State Championships Best of the rest: Brentsville 145-pounder Quentin Hastings and Millbrook's Derrick Borlie (152) placed second in the Class AA tournament. Manassas Park's Maximo Gonzalez (103), Matt Gosalvez (140) and Ben Martell each took second in the Class A tournament. Strong résumé: James Wood 112-pounder S.R. Shiley finished his career with four district titles, three regional titles, two state titles and 199 wins. Said an almost content Shiley, "I wish I could have gotten my 200th win."

McGillivray, Beall, cap off great wrestling seasons
Two Daniels who starred their wrestling career as 50-pounders for the Wellsville Junior Wrestling Club recently completed quite a season.
The first, Daniel McGillivray, left Genesee Valley Central School this year and moved to Virginia, where he promptly capped off a 40-3 season by winning the Virginia State Championship.
The second is Daniel Beall who recently capped an outstanding wrestling season with an impressive showing in the Maryland Independent State Tournament, then finished one win shy of All-America honors at National Preps.
Beall out-placed the Texas, New York and New England prep champs, among others, but was beaten by the New Jersey state champion from Blair Academy and was knocked out by his nemesis from Maryland who finished fourth.
Beall has been ranked as high as No. 15 in the country for wrestling.
Beall's final record was 42-9 with 30 pins this season. He recorded his 50th career pin at the tournament and now has 67 career wins.
McGillivray, who had a 319-106 record as a junior wrestler for Wellsville, will return home Saturday to wrestle in the 29th Annual Wellsville Junior Wrestling Club Tournament at the Wellsville Elementary School.
Beall won't be able to attend as he is playing in preseason Babe Ruth Classic baseball tournament at Cardinal Gibbons (formerly St. Mary's School for Boys, childhood home of the Babe Ruth).
Both Daniels will be on the wall Saturday as the Wall of Fame charts hang near the brackets.
McGillivray, who has placed the last year years at the Ohio Tournament of Champions, also took first at the 2005 NCHSA Per-Season Open in North Carolina, first at the 2006 Brute Empire Nationals at RIT in Rochester, seventh at the Brute Adidas Nationals at the University of Omaha, NE, sixth at the 2006 USA Wrestling Nationals at the University of Northern Iowa, fifth at the 2006 AAU Folkstyle World Championships at the Ford Field House Detroit and first at the 2006 NSHCA Open in Virginia Beach.
At Genesee Valley, he was a two-time Section V Class B champion. He is currently a sophomore.
Beall is expected to graduate with 11 varsity letters, as he also plays center field for his baseball team and midfielder in soccer.
Neither has forgotten Wellsville. Beall speaks fondly of the Hank Sinkey Little League Field while McGillivray celebrated winning sectionals by taking off his high school shirt and displayed his "I Love New York" T-shirt. The Washington Post headline was "McGillivrary wins states in a New York Minute."
