CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – For the second consecutive year, the Ithaca College men's wrestling program qualified five athletes for the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships, and on Friday, senior Isaias Torres delivered a standout performance to clinch the second All-American honor of his career. This season the championships are held at Alliant Energy Powerhouse with the American Rivers Conference hosting as the Bombers sit 29th of 68 schools with 10.5 team points after the first day of competition. Wartburg are in first with 61.5 and Augsburg and Wisconsin-La Crosse are tied in second with 54 team points.
Kamdyn Dorchester opened his nationals run in dominant fashion, defeating John Carroll's Thomas Lunt in a 19-1 tech fall. Midway through the first period, he connected on his first shot and rode Lunt out before securing back points to build a 6-0 lead. Dorchester countered a Lunt shot in the second period and added another takedown with 16 seconds remaining. He closed out the match with one more takedown and a near fall to lock up the victory. Dorchester returned to the mat to face No.?1 seeded Mitch Williamson of Wartburg College. Williamson sent the first year standout to the consolation bracket with a 16-1 technical fall. Dorchester secured a 5-1 overtime decision over Brockport's Mike Welsh, earning an escape and a takedown to lock up the victory. However in his next consi bout, he was eliminated by Mohamed Abdelatty (Ursinus) who earned a fall within the first period.
At 197 lbs., Ryan Galka returned to nationals and squared off against Coe College's Jean Ngoma, who went on to earn a 15-0 tech fall. Ngoma, who entered the tournament with just 17 bouts on the season, opened fast—connecting on an early takedown and securing a near fall as he set the tone and built from there. Galka was subsequently eliminated in his next match after being pinned in 2:01 by the University of Chicago's Gunnar Garriques in the consolation preliminaries.
Returning All-American Isaias Torres, seeded No. 5 at 141 lbs., made quick work of Marcus McIntyre in his opening match. Torres struck first, finishing a takedown in the closing seconds of the opening period. He added another takedown and a near fall in the second, then opened the third with an escape after McIntyre connected on a shot. Torres sealed the bout with one final takedown to earn a 14-5 major decision. The senior dropped a 12–3 major decision to TCNJ's Vincent Santaniello but bounced back in his next match to clinch All-American honors. Torres delivered an explosive first period against North Central's Joshua Robison, taking a 6–2 lead and never looking back en route to a 12–7 victory. He will be back in action on Saturday against Hayden Myers (Wesleyan).
In the No.?6 vs. No.?11 matchup, Wartburg's Patrick Mullen and Jay McDonnell wrestled to a scoreless opening period. Each earned an escape point in the second and third periods, respectively, setting up a tight finish. In the final 10 seconds, Mullen secured ankle control and finished the decisive takedown to claim a 4-1 decision. McDonnell was involved in another tightly contested bout, ultimately dropping an 8-5 sudden-victory decision to Wyatt Unser.
Konrad Parker suffered a tough two?overtime setback, falling 3-2 to Williams College's Gabe Wiggins. After the bout was tied 1-1 through regulation and the first overtime, Wiggins secured a reversal in the second OT to take the win. He rebounded in his first consolation bout with a 10-4 decision over Jack Hoffman before being eliminated in a tightly contested 4-2 decision against Roanoke's Xavier Preston.
Wrestling will continue on Saturday at 11 a.m. eastern time with wrestlers looking to solidify their All-American places in their respective brackets.
