BROCKPORT, NY – Culley Bellino (Canastota) re-set the single-season falls record for the Red Dragons, but Brockport secured a pin in the final bout at 285 pounds to give the hosts a 23-22 dual victory over the Cortland wrestling team on Tuesday evening. Cortland drops to 4-6 in duals, while Brockport improves to 5-6.
Cortland won five of the ten bouts in the dual. Bellino secured the lone pin for the Red Dragons, his 24th pin of the season and 25th fall, while improving to 8-1 with eight pins in duals this season. Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) recorded a technical fall to move to 12-1 on the year and 7-1 on the season in duals. Rocco Futia (Wallkill) and Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) each won by major decision, and Nicholas Rose (Lindenhurst) had a victory by decision.
Brockport began the dual with a decision at 125 pounds for a 3-0 lead, but the Red Dragons rattled off 15 team points in a row over the next three bouts. Futia posted an 11-2 major decision at 133 pounds to bump his record to 25-10 on the year. Bellino followed with a pin in just 37 seconds at 141 pounds, and Centrone secured a 22-6 technical fall late in the second period at 149 pounds for his 90th career victory as a Red Dragon.
Brockport then responded with a decision at 157 pounds and two pins at 165 and 174 pounds to jump back ahead. However, following the completion of the 165-pound bout, the Golden Eagles were deducted a point due to an unsportsmanlike conduct violation, putting the Brockport lead at 17-15 with three bouts to go.
Cunningham gave Cortland the lead once again with a 13-4 major decision at 184 pounds, his 14th win on the season. Rose followed with a 10-6 decision at 197 pounds that included a near fall late in the first period, and a takedown at the end of the third period to secure the bout win and put the Red Dragons up 22-17 heading into the final bout.
Trailing by five team points and needing a technical fall at 285 pounds to tie the score, Brockport's Mike Welsh earned a pin 2:10 into the first period to secure six team points and the come-from-behind dual victory for the Golden Eagles.
