ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell Big Red wrestling team delivered a dominant day at the Friedman Wrestling Center on Saturday, rolling past Brown, 38-15, before closing the afternoon with a 31-11 victory over Harvard in a back-to-back Ivy League doubleheader.
Cornell jumped out early against Brown in the noon dual, winning five of the first six bouts with bonus points to build a commanding lead. Joe Sciarrone opened the scoring at 125 pounds with an 18-0 technical fall over Chase Yasutake, followed by first-period pins from Bret Ungar (133) and Vince Cornella (141).
The no. 2 ranked, undefeated Jaxon Joy added a technical fall at 149 pounds, and no. 7 Meyer Shapiro followed with another tech fall at 157 to push Cornell's lead to 27-0 midway through the dual.
Brown got on the board at 165 pounds, but second-ranked Simon Ruiz answered immediately with a fall at 174. Christian Hansen added a technical fall at 184, and despite late losses at 197 and 285, Cornell secured the 38-15 team victory.
The Big Red carried momentum into the afternoon matchup with Harvard, rebounding from early setbacks to take control of the dual beginning at 141 pounds. No. 6 Cornella needed just 51 seconds to pin Dante Frinzi, igniting a run that saw Cornell win seven of the final eight bouts.
Joy earned a major decision at 149, while Shapiro and Ruiz each recorded technical falls at 157 and 174, respectively. Louie Cerchio contributed an 8-2 decision at 165, and Hansen followed with a decision at 184 to keep Cornell in command.
Heavyweight Cy Kruse capped the dual in emphatic fashion, earning a technical fall over Jaeden Kinlock early in the second period to seal the 31-11 win.
"We are progressing through the season how we want to," said The David Dunlop '59 Head Coach of Wrestling Mike Grey. "Our guys are improving week to week. Today we faced two solid teams and took care of business, but we also saw areas where we're going to continue to get better moving forward."
Cornell wrestling returns to action with another home doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 31, hosting Columbia at 1 p.m. before facing Arizona State University at 3 p.m. Both duals will be streamed live on ESPN+, with tickets available at BigRedTix.com.
