Late Bouts Decide Two Close Losses for Cornell Wrestling

NEWS

Ithaca, N.Y. — Cornell wrestling battled down to the final bout in both of its dual meets Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center, but the Big Red came up just short in a pair of tightly contested losses to Ivy League foe Columbia and No. 6 Arizona State.

Cornell fell to Columbia, 22-21, in its third Ivy League dual of the season before dropping an 18-17 decision to Arizona State later in the afternoon.

Cornell vs. Columbia

The opening dual featured momentum swings throughout, with Cornell winning seven bouts but ultimately falling on criteria.

At 125 pounds, Greg Diakomihalis jumped out to an early lead with two first-period takedowns, but Columbia's Sulayman Bah countered with a quick escape and secured a pin to give the Lions an early advantage, putting them on the board 6-0 against the Big Red.

Tyler Ferrara responded at 133 with a dramatic 6-5 win over Evin Gursoy, scoring a late takedown and riding out the final seconds to put Cornell on the board.

Vince Cornella followed with an 8-0 decision at 141 over Lorenzo Frezza, controlling the match with multiple takedowns and more than two minutes of riding time.

Jaxon Joy delivered a dominant performance at 149, earning a first-period technical fall over Richard Fedalen to push Cornell into the team lead.

Meyer Shapiro continued the momentum at 157, pinning Kai Owen after building a 7-0 first-period lead.

Columbia narrowed the gap at 165 as Caesar Alvan earned a 7-3 decision over Louie Cerchio.

Simon Ruiz steadied Cornell with an 8-5 win at 174 over Nick Fine, highlighted by strong late attacks and a third-period take down.

At 184, Christian Hansen was forced to medically forfeit following an injury during a scramble, allowing Columbia to gain critical team points. The Lions pulled closer at 197 as Jack Wehmeyer posted a 5-0 decision over Carson Crace. Cornell still lead 21 to 15 at this point over Columbia.

The dual came down to heavyweight, where Columbia's Vincent Mueller edged Ashton Davis in sudden-death overtime and won by decision, tying up the team scores 21-21.

Columbia earned the extra point to win the match by final criteria which came from the medical forfeit and pin advantage.
This is the first Ivy match up that Cornell wrestling has lost since 2020 vs. Princeton and the first time Columbia has beat Cornell since 1986.

Cornell vs. Arizona State University

Cornell again found itself in a back-and-forth battle against Arizona State, with the outcome decided in the final bout.

Arizona State opened with a win at 125 as Anee Vigil defeated Greg Diakomihalis by decision.

Ferrara evened the team score at 133, scoring an overtime take down to defeat Carter Dibert, 4-1.

Cornella followed with a gritty sudden-death victory at 141 over Pierson Manville, scoring the winning take down after a scoreless first period.

One of the marquee bouts of the afternoon came at 157, where Meyer Shapiro knocked off second-ranked Kaleb Larkin, rallying in the third period with a take down, near fall and riding time to earn an 8-5 win. This win improved Shapiro's record to 9-0.
