BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Cortland wrestling team, led by Angelo Centrone's (Mahopac) repeat title at 149 pounds and five other top-three placers, finished in second place out of nine schools at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships, hosted by Brockport.
Brockport won the league title with 167 points, followed by Cortland with 155, Ithaca with 149 and Oneonta with 139.5. Rounding out the field were RIT (115.5), Oswego (91), St. John Fisher (82.5), Elmira (22) and Utica (20). Cortland, Oneonta and Oswego are full-time SUNYAC members, while the other schools are wrestling affiliate members. Team scores are determined by each school's highest scorer at each weight class.
Centrone finished 5-0 at 149 pounds, with all of his wins earning bonus points. He opened with a pin, followed by three technical falls, and he defeated Ithaca's William Bentrim by an 18-7 major decision in the title match.
Christian Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville) and Colton Havens (Canisteo/Canisteo-Greenwood) earned second-place finishes at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively. Lievano won his first three matches before falling to Brockport's Trevor Middendorf in the 125-pound finals. Havens opened with four wins at 157, two by pin and two by technical fall, before losing to Tyler Rossini of Brockport in the championship match.
Culley Bellino (Canastota) finished third at 141 pounds, Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) was third at 174 pounds and Ethan Gallo (Minisink/Minisink Valley) finished third at 197 pounds. Bellino went 5-1 with three pins and a technical fall, Cunningham was 4-1 with four pins, and Gallo finished the day 4-1 with a technical fall and a major decision.
Bellino, a junior, broke two school records during the championship. He now has career totals of 52 pins and four technical falls, setting program marks for most combined falls (pins and technical falls) and for most pins. The previous school records were 51 pins and 53 combined falls, both set by Jared Myhrberg from 2009-13. Centrone also is nearing Myhrberg's combined falls total - he has 51 career combined falls with 11 pins and 40 technical falls.
The top three finishers in each weight class are recognized as All-SUNYAC - champions are first team, runners-up are second team, and third-place finishers are third team.
Seven other Cortland wrestlers posted top-six finishes. David Ensminger (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished fourth at 149 pounds, Wyatt Gentzel (Bellport) was fifth at 125 pounds, Rocco Futia (Wallkill) placed fifth at 133 pounds and Carmine Gerbino (Greenlawn/John Glenn) was fifth at 197 pounds. Ryan Langenmayr (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Regional) finished sixth at 141 pounds, Luke Chernaski (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) was sixth at 184 pounds, and Chris Ayala (Brentwood) finished sixth at 285 pounds.
