Copes wins 141-pound title at Thunderwolves Open Saturday, Thunderwolves win both duals Friday

In their first two home events this season, SUNY Niagara went 2-0 in the Thunderwolves Duals Friday and freshman Trevor Copes won his third 141-pound championship of the season at the 51st annual Thunderwolves Open Saturday in Sanborn.

SUNY Niagara 26, Garrett College 21

After competing against the Lakers at the Defend The Lake Open on Nov. 8 in Maryland, the Thunderwolves won the first four matches and built an 18-0 lead after victories from Jaron Barrientos, Vinny Falsetti, Aidan Gillings and Trevor Copes.

Barrientos won in a 15-2 major decision over Nicholas Anderson at 125 and Falsetti won in a 16-14 decision over Dekhi Church at 133. Gillings then pinned Macdeiel Marquez at 141 and Copes won in a 16-0 technical fall over Camden Hull at 149.

Two matches later, Joe Cicco won a 7-0 decision over Brooks Smith at 165. Aiden Poe then defeated Sundiata Chavis in an 18-0 technical fall at 184, which gave the Thunderwolves a 26-12 lead.

Garrett College then won the final two matches and cut the deficit to five points.

SUNY Niagara 34, Onondaga CC 24

A pin by Nicholas Pawlak over Travis Soucia at 157, a 16-0 technical fall by Joe Cicco over Luis Rivera at 165 and a forfeit win for Aiden Poe at 184 gave SUNY Niagara a 17-6 lead through the first four matches. Back-to-back pins at 197 and 285 helped the Lazers take an 18-17 lead with four matches remaining.

Barrientos won over Jordyn Hill in an 18-2 technical fall at 125 before the Lazers won at 133 fo a 24-22 lead. SUNY Niagara then closed the dual as Copes pinned Michael Boyhan at 141 and Gillings pinned Darik Soucia at 149 for the 10-point win.

For the third time this season, Trevor Copes won the 141-pound championship and was one of four top-four finishers for SUNY Niagara. After earning a bye, Copes recorded technical falls against Brockport’s Tanner King (18-2) and Onondaga CC’s Michael Boyhan (16-1) on his way to the championship round.

Copes then defeated Muskegon CC’s Ian Cook in a 10-6 decision to win the title. Copes previously won at 141 during the second and final day of the Ben McMullen Open on Oct. 31 and at the Defend the Lake Open on Nov. 8 and is now 16-2 this season.

Jaron Barrientos made his fourth appearance in a championship final this season at 125, but lost to Muskegon CC’s Jack Guerrero in a 7-6 decision. Barrientos reached the championship with a pin over Onondaga CC’s Jordyn Hill in the quarterfinal and a 19-3 technical fall against Brockport’s Cael Stewart.

Barrientos won at 125 at the Ben McMullen Open and Defend the Lake Open and became the program’s sixth all-time champion at the NYS Collegiate Championships at Onondaga CC on Nov. 22. Barrientos now has a 16-2 record.

Sophomore Joe Cicco pinned Muskegon CC’s Zephyr Fegley for third place at 165. This is Cicco’s fourth top-four finish of the season, including a runner-up outing at the Defend the Lake Open.

Sophomore Bobby Ranger was pinned by Brockport’s Luke Herendeen in the consolation final at 197 and placed fourth. This was Ranger’s first top-four finish of the season and third of his career.

SUNY Niagara continues its season at the Nassau CC Open on Long Island on Dec. 13. This marks the Thunderwolves’ final contest of the calendar year.
