BROCKPORT - Kyle Ingraham will have the opportunity to defend his state wrestling championship next weekend in Albany.
The Canandaigua Academy sophomore captured the 130-pound weight class Saturday night in the Super Sectionals at SUNY Brockport.
Ingraham, who missed the Section V Class A tournament due to illness, was given an at-large berth on Friday, because he was a defending state champion. He beat Eric Rowland of Greece Arcadia and met Rush-Henrietta's Phil Gordon in the quarterfinals. Ingraham blanked the Class AA champion, 7-0, to advance to Saturday's semifinal round.
Ingraham faced John-Martin Cannon of Brockport and posted a 17-4 superior decision to reach the final against Class A winner John Bonaldi of Greece Olympia. Cannon had eliminated Victor's Marcus Epling in the quarters.
Ingraham was in control all the way as he scored an 11-0 major decision over the Spartan grappler to improve his record to 32-4 on the season.
A pleasant surprise for the Braves came in the 140 weight class, where Albert Gianforti not only knocked off the Class AA champion, but avenged his Class A loss by beating Wayne's Nate Patterson in the final, 4-1, to advance to next week's state meet at the Pepsi Center in Albany.
The Irondequoit High transfer downed Rush-Henrietta's Amadu Jalloh, 5-4, in the quarterfinal round. He faced Spencerport's Bryan Bourne in the semis and eked out a 3-2 decision.
After a scoreless first period against Patterson, who won the Class A title the previous week with a 4-3 decision, the Wayne senior scored an escape in the second stanza. Gianforti recorded a takedown with 15 seconds left in the period to take a 2-1 lead.
The CA senior began the third period in the down position. He fought off Patterson's attempts to turn him to his back, and scored a reversal with two seconds left to secure the win.
Rob Mack qualified for state at 125 with a 3-1 decision over Hilton's Class AA champion, Joe Ranzenbach, in the final.
Trailing 1-0 in the third period, Mack escaped to tie the bout. He notched a takedown a few moments later for the winning points.
Mack gained the finals by beating Dan Pagan of Rush-Henrietta, 7-0, in the quarters, and controlling Brockport's Mark Collichio, 9-1, in the semifinals.
Dan Mandara also will be going to states for the Braves as his 112-pound final bout was halted in the second period when Pittsford coach Jason Bovenzi refused to let Jasen Borshoff continue, due to a possible concussion he suffered in his semifinal match.
"He wanted to give it a try in the finals, but I could see he just wasn't right, " Bovenzi said of his senior Class AA champion.
Mandara, the Class A victor, was winning 8-2 at the time.
The Braves sent five wrestlers to the finals. Cory Mahoney opposed Webster Schroeder's Dan Morreale for the 103 title, but the Warrior held on for a 10-8 win.
Mahoney blanked Cory Maggio of Hilton, 4-0, in the quarters and scored a 6-2 decision over Irondequoit's Kenny Jarrell in the semifinals.
Morreale ousted Victor's James Carney in the quarterfinals.
In the 96-pound weight class, CA's David Bradshaw lost to Class AA champion Nick Terenzi in the opening round.
Victor's Chris Payne lost his opening round match to eventual champion Kyle Borshoff of Pittsford at 119.
CA's Jason Wild lost on Friday to Dan Tomasso of Spencerport in their 135 match. The Braves' Ryan Aruk edged Fairport's Tom Gayvert, 5-4, in the 275 quarterfinals, but he lost in the semis to eventual winner Tom Rodak of Spencerport.
The Rangers also placed five wrestlers in the finals, but advance only two, while the Braves had four champions. Wayne advances three wrestlers as Schroeder and Brockport all have two moving on. Pittsford and Geneva have one each.
Division 2
Dan Rudy of Palmyra-Macedon is the lone local wrestler to advance to state in the small school division. He also was the only one to make the finals.
The Raider junior downed Rob McElwain, 9-3, in the title match at 160. McElwain, a senior at Holley, entered the bout with a 39-2 slate. Rudy (34-6) used a pair of second-period takedown and escape for five points to lock up the victory.
The Pal-Mac grappler scored a 7-1 decision over Ryan Harrison of Hornell in the opening round, then beat Jason Coat of Marcus Whitman, 14-7 in the quarterfinals. Rudy won his semifinal bout with a 13-3 major decision over Livonia's Steve Ames.
Other local Division 2 wrestlers to gain the semifinals included Sean Walton of Pal-Mac (112); Morgan Hoven of Midlakes (135); Mike Ciaburri of Pal-Mac (145); and Josh Wells of Marcus Whitman (215).
