Youth and high school athletes in four Southern Tier counties who compete in sports deemed high risk received the message they waited months to hear with the counties' announcements they can return to competition starting Feb. 1.
The decisions from officials in Chemung, Steuben, Tompkins and Tioga counties came after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday sports considered higher risk for transmission of COVID-19 by the New York State Department of Health could resume competition if they received county approval.
Basketball, wrestling and ice hockey are impacted winter sports that can restart Feb. 1. Other sports on the high-risk list include football, volleyball, boys lacrosse and rugby.
