Dierna Most Outstanding, Giaramita Wins Third Straight Crown at ECWC Championships

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Junior Bobby Dierna (Webster/Wayne) and senior Joe Giaramita (Elwood/John H. Glenn) each won weight-class titles as Cortland finished second in the team standings at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Championships, hosted by RIT.

Ithaca won the team title with 203 points, followed by Cortland (152), Brockport (119.5), Oswego (92.5), Oneonta (86.5), RIT (80), Lycoming (69.5) and Alfred State (31).

Dierna was named the championship's Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning at 157 pounds with a 4-0 record. He opened with a pin and a technical fall, pinned his opponent in the semifinals, and won by a 13-4 major decision in the finals.

Giaramita claimed his third straight ECWC title at 197 pounds. He finished 3-0 with a pin and two decisions, including a 5-3 win over Oswego's Daniel Smith in the finals.

Junior Mat Bradice (Mastic/William Floyd) and junior Colin Barber (Westfield, NJ) each recorded runner-up finishes - Bradice at 133 pounds and Barber at 165 pounds. Each won his first two matches before losing in the finals.

Junior Andrew Roden (Kings Park) and freshman Austin Whitney (Mexico/Mexico Academy) finished in third place at 133 and 149 pounds, respectively. Roden lost his first match before winning the next three, while Whitney won twice, lost in the semifinals, and won his last two bouts.

Six other Red Dragons earned top-six finishes. Sophomore Adrian Berry (Uniondale) was fourth at 157 pounds with a 3-2 mark. Freshman Brett Lewis (Madison) placed fifth at 184 pounds (3-2 record), sophomore Matt Norris (Homer) was fifth at 141 pounds (3-2 record) and Ryan Gerena (Shirley/William Floyd) finished fifth at 174 pounds (2-2 record). Freshman Tristan Broddus (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) placed sixth at 157 pounds (2-3 record) and junior Tyler Lilly (New Rochelle) was sixth at 285 pounds (3-3 record).

Cortland will host Oneonta in a dual match on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
