ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.
We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and
articles as well. Many college and public libraries have microform copies
of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years. In them, you can find
lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time,
make a trip to the library and check it out. Ask a librarian how to get
started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Greece Olympia senior Phillip Lombardo earned a berth in the 2006 New York State
Wrestling Championships at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Long Island on
Feb. 24-25.
Lombardo earned his state team berth by claiming the 145-pound championship at
the Section V Super-Sectional Championships (class AA/A) held this weekend at
Fairport High School.
Once again Lombardo met Brockport senior Justin James in the championship final.
Lombardo and James had met one another three times prior to their
super-sectional championship match. James beat Lombardo 3-1 in overtime in the
Brockport/Olympia dual meet (Jan. 4), but Lombardo bounced back to edge James in
the Monroe County Championship finals 3-2 (Jan. 28). James gained the upper hand
by beating Lombardo a week later in the sectional (class AA) finals with a 3-1
OT decision on Feb. 11.
Lombardo earned his finals appearance by beating Penfield wrestler Jeff Goff
(7-1) in their semi-final match, James earned his finals berth by beating
Spencerport junior Chris Vigliotti (3-2).
The championship final started just as the other three meetings had, cautious
and tactical as each wrestler developed their opportunities to score first.
The first period was wrestled to a scoreless tie. Lombardo won the second period
coin toss and registered a quick one point escape (1-0).
James chose down to start the third period and countered Lombardo's escape with
an escape of his own locking the score at 1-1. Neither wrestler could add to
their score as the third period came to an end. Once again the championship
match would go to overtime. The one minute overtime period did not benefit
either wrestler as each grappler repeatedly fought off each other's offensive
attacks.
The 2006 state team berth would be decided in double overtime criteria (30
seconds). Lombardo had choice and chose the down position. James countered
Lombardo's stand-up and each wrestler fought for control, but Lombardo's final
stand-up and counter earned a one-point escape as time expired in the
championship final giving him a 2-1 decision.
Lombardo will be joined by two other local wrestlers. Athena's Brandon Volpe and
Hilton's Mark Razenbach also won individual titles. Volpe defeated Spencerport's
Mike Hicks at 140 pounds in the finals and Razenbach won over Penfield's C.J.
Fogle at 125 pounds to earn a trip to states.
All the winners from Section 5 large schools include: Trevor Irwin (96 lbs /
Brockport), Zach Ellis (103 lbs / Brighton), Ryan Nicoletta (112 lbs /
Penfield), Dan Mandara (119 lbs / Canandaigua), Mark Razenbach (125 lbs. /
Hilton), Kyle Borshoff (130 lbs / Pittsford), John Martin-Cannon (135 lbs /
Brockport), Brandon Volpe (140 lbs. / Greece Athena), Phil Lombardo (145 lbs /
Olympia), Bryan Bourne (152 lbs / Spencerport), Eric Schuth (160 lbs /
Brockport), Josh Patterson (171 lbs / Wayne), Ryan LaMagra (189 lbs / Wayne),
Alex Nwaehujor (215 lbs / Brockport), and Mike Castro (275 lbs /
Churchville-Chili).
Athena's Alex Marianetti had a second-place finish at 103 pounds, falling to
Brighton's Zac Ellis 3-2. Olympia's Josh Veltre also placed second at 112
pounds, falling to Penfield's Ryan Nicoletta.
