ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.
We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and
articles as well. Many college and public libraries have microform copies
of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years. In them, you can find
lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time,
make a trip to the library and check it out. Ask a librarian how to get
started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Dan Mandara and Alex Ekstrom both compete in wrestling's lighter weights, but
both have just finished with an opponent that is smaller than them -
microscopic, in fact.
Mandara, a junior at Canandaigua Academy, and Ekstrom, a freshman from
Palmyra-Macedon, are going to the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association state meet this weekend after suffering bouts with the flu.
"I had the flu two weeks ago when I wrestled at sectionals, " said Mandara. "I
got over it. I'm all healthy. "
Mandara wrestles in the 119-pound weight class in Division 1. Ekstrom is in the
112-pound class in Division 2.
"I'm doing all right now, " said Ekstrom. "I'm getting better as we go. "
Ekstrom is also competing on two bad knees. He had surgery to remove the
miniscus from his right knee earlier in the season, then ruptured a bursa sac in
the other knee before the sectionals Feb. 10-11.
"We are coming up with creative ways just to keep him in shape and trying to
allow his knees to come back, " said Pal-Mac coach Brian Quick. "When they flare
up, they are the size of softballs and get drained, so you have to worry about
infection after surgery.
"He's overcome a lot. "
The tournament begins today with the first round at 1 p.m. Mandara and Ekstrom
both have first-round matches.
Mandara (34-4) faces Jake Blake (no record available) of Glens Falls.
"At states, every kid is a very worthy opponent, " said Mandara.
His class features Matt Mariacher (39-4) of Iroquois, who defeated Mandara in
the finals of CA's Bradshaw Tournament, and defending champion Lou Ruggirello
(42-1) of Valley Central, a defending state champ. Mariacher and Ruggirello are
in the opposite bracket, as is Mike Priccirillo of Commack, whom Mandara
defeated 10-2 in the first round of states last season.
"Dan, being his second time there, is pretty comfortable with his ability to
perform and wrestle his best, " said CA coach Rich Romeo. "Really, you have to
take things one match at a time because all of the kids are good wrestlers. You
have to be ready to go and not look too far ahead at the other matches that you
might have. "
Ekstrom (29-3) takes on junior Patrick Spaulding (18-1) of New Paltz in the
first round.
"This is a new thing for me, so I'm taking things one match at a time, " said
Ekstrom, who is making his first state appearance.
The rest of the field includes previous place winners Scott Dayton (37-2) of
Chenango Valley, Michael Castellano (11-1) of John Glenn and Michael Gomez
(28-0) of Locust Valley. A first-round victory would pit Ekstrom against Dayton
in the second round. Dayton has a first-round bye.
"There are not any returning state champions in his weight, " said Quick. "I'm
optimistic and hopeful. "
Wayne also sends two representatives in Division 1 with Josh Patterson at 171
pounds and Ryan Lamagra at 189.
