ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Letchworth wins State Farm Classic

HORNELL - The Red Raiders took a tournament-high four weight class championships, highlighted by an Aaron Parks come-from-behind win at 135, but placed second behind Letchworth in the 2005 State Farm Classic at Hornell High School.

"I think what hurt us here if I had to look is some of our kids didn't wrestle back," said Hornell head coach Matt Sheldon. "It was those third and fourths that we needed. I had quite a few kids that lost ended up going to fifth and sixth. They need to come back and get those thirds. I always tell the guys, that's how you win tournaments."

While Hornell placed a tournament-best six wrestlers in the finals, one better than Letchworth's five, the Indians held a 4-to-1 advantage in wrestlers competing in third-place matches, just enough of a difference to give Letchworth the 234-221 advantage in team points.

Parks may have been the biggest surprise among Hornell's champions, coming back from a 2-1 deficit with 30 seconds remaining against Alfred-Almond's Andrew Davis.

With time running out, and Davis looking like he would give Alfred-Almond it's lone champion, Davis was penalized for his third false start of the match, giving Parks the point he needed to send the match into overtime. That was the momentum swing he would need, coming up with the two points necessary to put away Davis.

"I wasn't really expecting to get out of it," said Parks. "He held me down pretty good there. I guess it's better to be lucky than good. He was tough on his feet. I got in on his legs a couple times, but I couldn't finish it. I had a little bit of desperation there diving at him."

Bath-Haverling's Tony Viselli may have pulled off the upset of the tournament, bettering previously undefeated Devan Bertch, of Canisteo-Greenwood, in the second overtime en route to being named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the 140-275 weight classes.

With the match tied, 2-2, Bertch gave Viselli the spark he needed on a technical violation when he grabbed Viselli's head gear in the third period. Bertch would regain a 4-3 lead but Viselli made an escape just before time expired to send the match into extra time.

"I was pretty pumped that I got the point," said Viselli, who was previously winless in two matches against Bertch. "I think that was the big turning point of the match. It did get me back into it. When I got him to double OT, I knew I had him beat because not many people can hold me down."

Viselli was the only winner for the Rams, who placed fifth in the team competition.

Just behind Hornell, in third place, was Bolivar-Richburg, a quickly developing program that is establishing itself as the power of Allegany County.

The Wolverines placed four wrestlers in the finals, with Tyler and Andrew Taylor picking up wins.

"The guys did very well," said head coach Rich Schubmehl. "It's the best this school's ever done. It was a really good tournament for the team and it was another step in the right direction toward where we're hopefully going in the end of the season."

Tyler Taylor avenged one of two losses on the season with a 9-6 decision of Canisteo-Greenwood's Kyle Amidon while Andrew Taylor defeated Hornell's Josiah Gardner, 5-2, after the two were tied 2-2 heading into the third period, to improve his record to 28-1 on the season.

"I wasn't wrestling very good today," said Andrew Taylor. "I kind of had to turn it on there or it wouldn't have ended up the way I wanted it to."

One of the two Wolverines that did lose, Dustin Pierce, went down in one of just four pins in the finals, falling in 2:55 to Genesee Valley's Caleb Olcott.

"It feels good," said Olcott. "I got beat by one of their guys in the last tournament, but it was a different guy here. I've got a good team and coach (Matt Hopkins) does a good job putting the team together."

Other winners for Hornell were Tyler Sick at 152 pounds, Ryan Harrison at 160 and Bill Drake at 215.

Letchworth finished with three winners, Mike Nevinger at 103, Weston Weaver at 112 and Joe Henderson, who took Most Outstanding Wrestler for the 96-135 weight classes, at 130.

Canisteo-Greenwood, who finished fourth place, received wins from Nick Clark at 189 pounds and Ryan Turner at 275.

Fillmore's Klye Ackerman and Jasper-Troupsburg's Mark Guinnup also picked up wins at 96 pounds and 119, respectively.
