ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Cortland takes home honors at Wrestling Tournament;
Freshman Nate Schiedel is the only Raider Champion

For the past 10 years the Tigers wrestling team from Cortland has made their annual winter visit to the Caledonia-Mumford Holiday Wrestling Tournament. It seems that every year the Tigers are in the hunt, only to come up short. 2005 was to be their year as Cortland was not to be denied. Entering the championship round with a 62-point lead over its nearest competitor, Canisteo/Greenwood, the Tigers used their five individual champions to push them over the top and capture the Cal-Mum Holiday Tournament Team Title for 2005.

Canisteo/Greenwood with four individual champions and Churchville-Chili with three individual champions, with Cortland were certainly the dominating team of the tournament. Devan Bertch of Canisteo/Greenwood was selected the Most Outstanding Wrestler (MOW) for the tournament. Bertch was most impressive as he recorded four falls on his way to the 171-lb. Class Championship.

Several other wrestlers were in the running for the MOW award including Bertch’s fellow teammates Nick Clark with three falls and Ryan Turner also with three falls. Ken Perry of Churchville-Chili registered two falls and one technical fall. Cortland’s Mike Fenn with three falls and one tech fall and his teammate, Sam O’Donnell with three falls were given strong consideration. Hometown star Nate Schiedel of Cal-Mum’s with four falls also made his case for the MOW.

Nate Schiedel was to be the only Raider to win an individual 2005 Championship. Nate had a strong tournament in the 152-lb. class. During the tournament Nate recorded falls over Robert Buchel of Sodus, Mike Emmu, Travis Lana of Dansville and Alec Pratt of Canisteo in the championship finals.

The 2005 Cal-Mum Raiders are fielding a young squad. The team’s weight classes are predominately manned by underclassmen. Though only Nate Schiedel took top honors with a class championship, several other Raiders put in a good showing at the tournament. Bill Rose battled all the way back through the consolation brackets only to fall to Dansville’s Jerry Pilkenton in his final match for 3rd place, giving Bill a 4th place finish in the 125-lb. weight class. Tim Sullivan likewise fought back tough through the 140-lb. consolation brackets only to drop a 7-1 decision to Jared Pragle of HF-L, giving him a 4th place trophy. Senior David Griffin did very well as he won his 3rd place match with a fall over Cortland’s Cody Cute in the 145-lb. weight class. Freshman David Kingsbury wrestled impressively as he took 3rd place after loosing to eventual champion Billy Breon in the 160-lb. semis.
