ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Grappling with controversy

By JIM EICHENHOFER, Staff Writer

Finger Lakes Times

February 7, 2003

WATERLOO — Amid a cascade of boos from a large segment of an irate home crowd, the victorious North Rose-Wolcott wrestling team headed toward the locker room Thursday night to celebrate a controversial 36-31 verdict. With the win, the Cougars had defended their Finger Lakes Central title.

Seconds later, in the words of Cougars head coach James Prentice, matters turned “ugly.”

As Prentice and his grapplers walked toward a corner of the gymnasium, several Waterloo spectators began exchanging heated words with their North Rose-Wolcott counterparts, who were seated near the entrance to the Cougars’ locker room. A handful of spectators threw objects, including water bottles. Meanwhile, in response to catcalls from some Waterloo fans seated in the gym’s balcony, at least one NR-W wrestler directed an obscene gesture toward those Tribe supporters.

Fortunately, there were no fisticuffs or injuries. When a member of the Waterloo village police department arrived soon thereafter, cooler heads already had prevailed, and the visiting Cougars had been whisked to their team bus to avoid any further confrontations.

The bizarre melee resulted from a discrepancy over Waterloo standout Jarrod Ticconi’s weight, a disparity that likely determined the match’s outcome.

With Waterloo holding a 31-27 lead and just two bouts remaining — at 189 and 215 pounds — the Indians needed a win in either matchup to clinch the victory and the FL Central crown. Waterloo appeared to be in optimum position to do so, because Ticconi was slated to wrestle the 215-pound bout.

However, when Waterloo’s Justin Van Orden stepped onto the mat for the 189-pound affair, Prentice signaled the referee. Prentice told the official that according to his weigh-in sheet, Ticconi could not participate at 215. A wrestler must weigh a minimum of 180 to compete in that class, but Prentice’s list indicated that Ticconi had weighed in at 179.9.

Since Van Orden had already set foot on the mat, by rule Waterloo head coach Tyrone Thomas could not pull Van Orden back and use Ticconi at 189 — making Ticconi ineligible to wrestle in either bout.

NR-W’s Jeremy Aumick subsequently posted a decision over Van Orden to cut the visitors’ deficit to 31-30. Nate Hayes then sealed the Cougar victory by pinning Matt Crance in 27 seconds. Crance was forced to fill in for Ticconi, who — along with Thomas — was incensed upon learning he would not be allowed to compete at 215.

Adding to the confusion: A hand-written weight sheet that Thomas displayed after the match listed Ticconi’s weight at 179.9, next to a ‘180’ that had been scribbled over. Thomas was unsure whether the number had been intentionally changed, saying it was possible the varying figures were the result of Ticconi being called back to the scale after an initial measurement.

Thomas lodged an official protest with the referee, but was not optimistic that it would result in the final two bouts of the match being re-wrestled.

Meanwhile, Prentice explained that he anticipated Ticconi would compete at 189, as Ticconi had in Waterloo’s match against Midlakes earlier Thursday. When Van Orden stepped onto the mat instead, Prentice notified the ref of Ticconi’s status.

“I fully expected they were going to put their 189-pounder (Ticconi) out there,” Prentice said. “And so when they put the other boy on the mat, that meant (Ticconi) was disqualified at 215 because he did not weigh enough. I feel that it’s important to note that I went over there and told (a Waterloo assistant) not to (use Ticconi at 215).

“It was a coaching mistake made. I made it myself when I was a younger coach. You have to weigh at least 180 pounds to compete at heavyweight — he only weighed 179 pounds. That’s an oversight.”

Prentice, cursed by a Waterloo athlete during a post-match interview, defended his decision, saying he was simply applying the rule book.

“The word is going to be out that there was cheating by us tonight, but that’s only because people aren’t aware of the rules,” Prentice said. “(Ticconi) did not weigh enough to compete at that weight class. It was that simple. That’s the way the rules are.

“It’s too bad that it has to end that way. After that happened, you knew it was going to be ugly. I didn’t want it to be ugly like this, but that’s the way it turned out.”

Thomas countered that Prentice’s decision to render Ticconi ineligible may have been legal, but was not within the spirit of the rules. Thomas said Ticconi had wrestled up at 215 several times this season and had not weighed less than 180 all year. If Thomas had known Ticconi couldn’t wrestle at 215, the first-year head coach would have moved him to 189.

“I like (Prentice), but come on,” Thomas said. “You’ve got to take a match that way? We could have put Jarrod at 189 and won the match, but Jarrod wanted to wrestle the tougher opponent, which he’s done all year long. (His weight has) never been a question.

“We wanted to stay close and have it be decided by Jarrod. That’s what we did. To lose a match that way, is pretty disheartening for me as a coach, and it’s disheartening for my kids because basically, it’s like stealing the match.”

Thomas questioned the timing of his opposite’s decision to notify the referee.

“I think that part of the rules is (a clause) that says, within reason,” Thomas explained. “I think if I was in the same boat, I wouldn’t do that to someone else. You either deserve to win or you don’t. Tonight our kids deserved to win.”

“Ten years ago, when I first started out, it happened to me,” said Prentice of Ticconi’s ineligibility. “Ever since then, I never made that mistake again. You just have to be careful. It’s part of the procedures: Knowing how much a boy has to weigh in order to compete at a certain weight. It’s a hard lesson to learn.”

Earlier in the day, both squads defeated Midlakes, setting up a head-to-head matchup to decide the FL Central crown. Waterloo scored a 42-19 victory over the Screaming Eagles, while NR-W triumphed 57-9.

Seeking its first league championship since the 1980s, Waterloo captured the first four bouts on the way to a 19-0 lead. Bryant Tumbelekis opened with a pin at 103, followed by victories from Anthony Guererri (decision), Tony DiDuro (technical fall) and Curtis Wheeler (decision).

Brian Van Norman put NR-W (7-1, 5-0) on the scoreboard with a pin at 130, but Josh Mateo’s pin at 135 put Waterloo (8-1, 4-1) in front 25-6. From there, the Cougars went 6-1 over the final seven bouts.

After a forfeit win at 140, Matt LaValley produced a technical-fall verdict to cut the visitors’ gap to 25-18. Waterloo’s Dustin Thomas answered with a major decision for a 31-18 advantage, before NR-W’s Mike Webster and Matt Dumas followed with a pin and decision, respectively. Dumas eked out a 7-6 win over Dean Lemmon by tallying a point with one second remaining in regulation, making the overall count 31-30 entering the final two bouts.
