2000-01 Attica Blue Devils Varsity Wrestling Team

The Attica Varsity wrestling team was able to put together a successful season after losing ten starters from last year's number eight-ranked team in the state (large schools). The Blue Devils were led by returning starters Jason Duprat, Bill Hulme, Clayton Conway, Jake Gillen, and Jake Gerhardt. All five were Class B placers and advanced to the Section 5 state qualifying tournament in Brockport. Conway and Gillen were both Sectional Champions; with it being Jake's second title and Clayton's third. No Attica wrestler had ever won three sectional titles in the history of the school.*

The Blue Devils finished second in the division behind the Genesee-Region champions, Holley Central. Attica ended up with two league all-stars in Jake Gerhardt and Jake Gillen. At the Class B section tournament, the grapplers hoped to extend their record of three consecutive sectional titles. They fell short of their quest, but managed to turn in a strong tournament finishing third out of twenty schools. Their two conquerors came at the hands of the ninth and eleventh ranked large schools in the state polls. In the state qualifiers, Conway and Gillen finished second and fourth respectively at their weight classes. As a team, Attica came in eight place out of eighty schools.

* EDITOR'S NOTE: This statement is incorrect. In addition to Clayton Conway, both Manfred Wolcott (1956, 58, & 59) and Tim Embt (1966, 67, & 68) also won 3 sectional titles for Attica.
