ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.
We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and
articles as well. Many college and public libraries have microform copies
of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years. In them, you can find
lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time,
make a trip to the library and check it out. Ask a librarian how to get
started and how to print out the articles that you find.

SYRACUSE ― Brockport's Steve Taylor brought the crowd to its feet with a
controversial, 5-4, overtime decision over Kareem Johnson of Niagara Falls (Sec.
6) to win the state wrestling championship at 145 pounds last night at the
Onondaga County War Memorial.
Johnson was assessed his second stalling point as the buzzer ending the third
period sounded, tying the match at 5-5 and sending it into overtime.
The Niagara Falls junior was initially penalized with :50 seconds left after he
repeatedly claimed injuries and equipment disorders to gain recuperation time,
tactics he had used throughout his other state tournament matches.
Johnson, who had been undefeated and who took Taylor down twice in regulation to
build a 5-3 lead ― all of Taylor's points came from escapes ― caught the
Brockport senior napping with :38 seconds left in the first 1:00 overtime period
for a 2-0 edge.
Taylor (35-0) got out immediately and began the second overtime period on top.
Johnson, who was obviously more fatigued, was assessed a two-point stalling
penalty as he lay nearly motionless on the mat with :02 left in the second
overtime, putting Taylor in front, 3-2, entering the final one-minute period.
Johnson let him up to fall behind, 4-2, then took Taylor down again with :26
left to tie the match, 4-4.
But he left Taylor, who had no trouble getting up and out in the match, too much
time.
Taylor stood up immediately and escaped a final time with :16 left, then was
warned himself for stalling. Much of the crowd voiced the opinion that he should
have been penalized at the final buzzer.
If Taylor had been assessed one stalling point, the match would have ended tied
and Johnson would have been awarded the state 145-pound title on the first
referee's criterion, total takedowns.
Two other Section 5 wrestlers also won state championships, helping the section
to the team title.
Alfred-Almond junior Kenny Porter defeated Suffern (Sec. 1) junior John
Spiegleman, 12-5, at 138 pounds and Wellsville senior Brian Gray handled
Bellport (Sec. 11) senior Mike Murtha, 14-7, at 155 pounds.
East Rochester senior Roy Frey's bid for a state championship failed when he
lost, 10-5, to Plainedge (Sec. 8) junior Craig Vitagliano in the 98-pound final.
Frey (38-2), a Greco-Roman 105-pound gold medalist at last summer's Empire State
games, allowed Vitagliano to escape with 1:39 left in the second period then was
taken down 38 seconds later and never recovered from the 6-3 deficit.
After shaking Vitagliano's hand at the end of the match, the ER senior was booed
by the crowd when he walked away as Vitagliano tried to embrace in the center of
the mat.
Frey's only previous loss this season came at the Class C sectional
championships, where he was disqualified for illegally body-slamming an
opponent. Frey hopes to attend Seton Hall or Franklin and Marshall next year.
Six section 5 wrestlers advanced to the consolation finals, and helped build an
8½ point, first-place lead in the sectional team standings before last night's
bouts.
Midlakes senior Bryant Ranger had no trouble handling Chaminade (Sec. 3) junior
Robert Donnino in the 112-pound third-place match.
Ranger (40-1, 151-17-1) built a 7-0 advantage en route to a 13-2 victory that
gave him third place. His only loss came in the semifinals when he fell, 8-6, to
Sleepy Hollow (Sec. 1) junior Juan-Carlos Garcia.
"He (Garcia) made four takedowns on the same move," Ranger said. "His speed was
incredible. Finally I caught on to what he was doing and I was able to take him
down in the third period."
Despite the loss, he was happy to go home No. 3. Ranger, who plans to attend
Brockport State, qualified for SuperSectionals five times but never advanced to
the state meet until this season.
"At the beginning of the year, I had no idea how I was going to do," he added.
"I just wanted to make it here. I came in here wanting No. 1 but two weeks ago I
didn't know if it would be possible. Two days ago I really didn't even know."
DeCarr ignored a painful pinched nerve and strained shoulder muscle he incurred
in a consolation semifinal victory to defeate Bryan Roggie of Beaver River (Sec.
3), who pinned him in Friday's quarterfinals.
"I made one mistake and he cradled me up (Friday)," DeCarr said. "But I wasn't
going to make the same mistake twice."
DeCarr (42-2, 93-11), who said he will attend Delhi Tech next fall, turned
Roggie's favorite move against him last night.
"I reviewed the (video) tapes," the NR-W senior said. "When he went for his
ankle pick, I cradled him."
Marcinek (36-2) was the only other Section 5 consolation finalist who placed
third. He defeated Cassdaga Valley (Sec. 6) senior John Penhallow, 3-2. Marcinek
also defeated Penhallow, 8-6, in Friday's quarterfinals.
Barbato lost to South Jefferson (Sec. 3) senior Jeff LaFlamme, 13-2. Williams
gave up a third-period, five-point takedown and lost to Indian River (Sec. 3)
junior Jamie Call. Bovenzi lost a 5-2 decision to Bayshore (Sec. 11) senior Joe
Malchuski.
Bovenzi (37-3) upset Bloomfield's Terry Lucero, who would have been one of the
favorite's at 167 this weekend, 1-0, at last week's SuperSectionals. The Athena
senior wrestled very strongly at the state tournament but lost to 1989 state 155
champion Seamus Lyman, 4-3, in yesterday's semifinals.
