ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

UPSTART GATES CHILI caused the biggest shock waves in the Section 5 Class AAA wrestling tournament Saturday by winning two individual titles.

"It's been 11 years since we had a sectional champ here," says Gates coach Jim Hosenfelt, "and that was the only time we ever had one. Now, in one night, we pop two."

Seventh-seeded Mike LaRocca pulled the first upset by stunning top-seeded Ray Vincelli of Spencerport for the 132-pound title. Vincelli had beaten LaRocca by 10-4 in a dual meet earlier this season.

"Ray probably took him too lightly," Hosenfelt admits, "but it's been that way for us all season. Too many people have taken us for granted. Mike really wanted another shot at Vincelli. He (LaRocca) pinned the No. 2 seed to get to the finals."

If LaRocca's 8-5 victory was unexpected, what can you say about sophomore Dave Sillipini's victory over Kearney's Gary Eiffert in the 138-pound finals? Sillipini came into the tournament with a modest 13-7-1 record while Eiffert, the top seed, hadn't lost all season.

"The kids are on cloud nine," Hosenfelt said. "It's the closest team I've ever had. They work hard and they pull hard for each other. To have the kind of season we've had (11-4 in duals and a second-place finish in the County West) and now this..."

Team champion Fairport and Spencerport each had three individual champs. Bob Nyff (167), Dan Enright (215) and Wally Vaughn (250) went all the way for Fairport while Trev Graham (91), Rory Legacy (98) and Ron Winnie (126) won for Spencerport... Graham, just a freshamn, finished second a year ago. He's taking advantage of a new state rule that allows mature junior high students to compete on varsity teams.
