1956-57 Letchworth Indians Varsity Wrestling Team

The Letchworth Varsity Wrestling squad completed the 1956-57 season with a 10-1 record and its eighth straight County Championship. The team won the County Championship by defeating each league opponent twice. Its only loss was in a non-league contest with a strong Canisteo team.

The first string squad was chosen prior to matches by eliminations. The usual first-string is as follows: Don Tucker―95 lbs.; Philip Mucher―103 lbs.; Gerald Fladie―113 lbs.; Al Carpenter―120 lbs.; Bill Shearing―127 lbs.; Jerry Barlow―133 lbs.; David Cox―138 lbs.; Bill Miller―145 lbs.; Jim Madison―154 lbs.; Ken Smith―165 lbs.; Dave Weiss―unlimited. Sometimes these boys were defeated in eliminations and these boys wrestled: Warren Bailey―112 lbs.; Dave Shearing―138 lbs.; and Harold Kemp―154 lbs.

The J.V. squad had a 2-1 record, losing a close match to Livonia's Varsity. The Varsity and J.V. are coached by Mr. Nelson.

The 1957-58 team will lose four men by graduation. They are: Al Carpenter, Bill miller, Jim Madison, and Dave Weiss.

The County Semi-finals held in the Warsaw gym gave ten wrestlers the chance to compete in the County Finals. They were: Don Tucker, Philip Mucher, Al Carpenter, Jerry Barlow, Jim Madison, Bill Miller, David Cox, Ken Smith, Dave Weiss, and Harold Kemp. In the County Finals four wrestlers won County Championships. They were: Bill Miller, Ken Smith, Dave Weiss, and Harold Kemp.

In the Sectional Semi-finals Bill Miller, Ken Smith, and Harold Kemp were defeated, leaving Dave Weiss to represent Letchworth in the Sectional Finals. In these Sectional Finals, Dave Weiss won a decision to become sectional champion.
