ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.
We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and
articles as well. Many college and public libraries have microform copies
of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years. In them, you can find
lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time,
make a trip to the library and check it out. Ask a librarian how to get
started and how to print out the articles that you find.

Oakfield-Alabama Central School's wrestlers came through with an 11th-hour drive
to nose out Albion High, 51-50 in thrilling finals of the Genesee-Orleans League
wrestling championships on the Oakfield mats Saturday night. Oakfield thus took
its fourth straight G-O team championship after having gone through the regular
season with a 5-3 record as compared to Albion's 8-0 slate.
After the final bout, the teams were found to be tied at 50-all, but the
discovery of a one-point error in scoring put Oakfield out in front. Ed Canne,
Batavia sports promoter, who sponsored the trophy for the inning school,
announced that he will donate a cup to both the Oakfield and Albion teams for
their outstanding efforts.
Winners of the finals bouts will represent the G-O League in the Section 5
tournament to be held in Rochester on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. under
the direction of Mike Spierdowis, Section 5 wrestling chairman and coach of the
Albion grapplers. Albion and Oakfield each have five contenders while Alden had
two.
Alden in Third
Alden wound up in third place in the team competition with 24 points while
Alexander had 19, State School for the Blind 15, Kendall 5, Holley 4 and Medina
2. Pins for Tillman Meney, Leon Halat and Ellis Newton in the finals gave
Oakfield the extra punch to clinch the meet. Gary Garrison and Tom Wimmer of
Alden and Loren Johnson of Albion scored the only other pins of the finals. In
one of the fastest bouts of the evening, Albion's undefeated John Klopp squeezed
a 3-1 decision over Don Yerger of Oakfield.
Bronze medals were given to the first and second place winners by George
Messinger, G-O league wrestling chairman and Oakfield grapple coach.
Coaches assisting besides Messinger and
Spierdowis were Walt Hay of Alden, Ray Daugherty of Alexander, Don Birecree of
the State School, Donald Matties of Holley and Ralph Beaney of Kendall. Gene
Davis, physical director of Warsaw High, was the referee.
