ArmDrag.com is looking for volunteers to help populate the Archives.  We're not only looking for results, but tournament brackets, photos, and articles as well.  Many college and public libraries have microform copies of complete newspapers dating back over 100 years.  In them, you can find lots of wrestling results. If you enjoy doing research, and you have some time, make a trip to the library and check it out.  Ask a librarian how to get started and how to print out the articles that you find.

1949-50 Alfred Saxons

Coach: Mr. Alex Yunevich

1949-50 Alfred University Saxons Varsity Wrestling Team

FRONT ROW: Quirk (manager), Jova, Jones, Franklin, D'Avanzo, Kiesow, Thompson, Alexander, Turner. MIDDLE ROW: Stottle, McConnell, Kuhn, Wilson, Bailey, Amdur, Ganung, Ottoway, Rizzo. BACK ROW: Raczkiewicz, McMahon, Clark, Spring, Bly, Plessner, Smith, Botti, W. McMahon. (SOURCE: Kanakadea, Alfred University, 1950)

Alfred's matmen showed some of their pre-war spirit this past Fall, as they won twice, lost three matches and tied one with the University of Buffalo. With such outstanding varsity competitors as Dale Thompson and Art D'Avanzo returning, and many other experienced men, Alfred's wrestlers reached new heights despite their record. The highlight of the season came when the Purple and Gold matmen traveled to Canton, N.Y., to tangle with the St. Lawrence University team. The St. Lawrence wrestlers, who had beaten such notable teams as Columbia and Yale before meeting Alfred, and who had not lost a match to the Saxons since 1931, were beaten beyond doubt by the score 21-11. Earlier, on Jan. 14, and, before a packed field house, won a decisive victory, 21-22. The letter men are Art D'Avanzo, Dale Thompson, and Jack Wilson. (Kanakadea, 1950)

1949-50 Alfred University Saxons Freshman Wrestling Team

FRONT ROW: Greenberg (manager), Sander, Ferguson, Sailer, Zeh, Jones. BACK ROW: Keers, Clark, Wainman, Zielinski, Anderson, Cummings. BACK ROW: Rubenstein, Martino, Chalin, Kin, Reid. (SOURCE: Kanakadea, Alfred University, 1950)

Boasting such outstanding men as Clarence Anderson, Richard Bliss, Robert Ferguson, William Reid, Robert Wainman, and Elmer Zeh, the Freshman Wrestling squad had a hard time digging up any competition, and found it almost impossible to uncover any tough opposition. However, much experience was gained, as well as techniques and holds from Coach Alex Yunevich. The Purple and Gold Frosh were the best that Alfred has seen in a long time. (Kanakadea, 1950)
